“The mission of Giving Goods is to connect people with goods to donate, to non-profits with a specific need for these items and to help volunteers find the organization where their time and talents can be best served.”
Why Blog About Donating Time and Goods?
After working and volunteering in various non-profit agencies for 15 years, I have seen tremendous needs go unfulfilled simply because people were unaware. It’s not that people did not want to find good homes for their gently used furniture, clothing and other household items. Our world is filled with generous people who want to give, but who are unsure exactly which local non-profits have specific need of their donation. It makes me sad to think of the missed opportunity that happens every time gently used items in good condition are “just dropped off” somewhere because the need is unknown. It is my goal to offer a resource that helps everyone learn the benefits of donating and to help maximize your efforts to give back to the community.
If you have an idea about a great way to reuse items or information on a non-profit in need, we need your input. Everyone in the Dallas/Fort Worth community benefits when we donate goods, besides it feels good to know you are helping others.
Make today the day you clean out your closet, fold up the baby clothes, round up last year’s back-to-school clothes that didn’t get worn, dry-clean the dresses or suits you haven’t worn in years, shine up that pair of shoes that doesn’t match anything you own anyway, and bring them to someone who can really use them.
Do you have gently-used household items that are in storage or taking up space in your garage or attic? Dust them off and polish them up; make a difference for someone in need. Your donation could help a family shopping on a budget. Do you have curtains or table clothes that you have replaced? Let them brighten someone’s place, your donation could help make a house a home.
Donating versus throwing things away means less trash in our landfills. Donate your unused party supplies such as balloons, plates and paper hats; bring a smile to the face of a child staying in a shelter on their birthday.
Giving your time is valuable too. Many non-profits could not get by without their dedicated volunteers. Volunteering can be a family activity as well. It is a great way for children to learn to help out and get involved in their community.
Donating your unused items helps create jobs at Goodwill and the Salvation Army, since your donations will need to be sorted, organized, displayed and distributed to those who can benefit from them.
Giving to a resale store that supports a non-profit organization, allows that non-profit to offer financial support to families who have fallen on hard times and are unable to pay or keep up with their bills. Sometimes these resale shops even offer pickup service, it’s definitely worth a phone call.
There are many benefits of donating your time as well as your things, donating helps the community by giving a boost to those in need, it helps the environment by reusing and recycling items and it feels good! So check out our ‘I Have A Donation’ page to find the perfect place for your donation now.
